When it comes to bamboo furniture it can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Rattan furniture, wicker furniture, and even plain bamboo all can create amazing furniture styles to fit the decor of your home inside or out. However there are some issues if you want to paint or repaint bamboo furniture. Most bamboo furniture is sealed to prevent damage and rot. That can make it hard to paint or repaint it. Here is how you have to go about it:

1. Sand or scrape it

– For flatter or not woven bamboo furniture you should sand away any existing paint or sealants. Use a fine grit sandpaper and thoroughly remove as much as you can so that your paint will adhere well. For woven or very curved bamboo furniture you can use a wire brush to scrape off the existing paint or sealant. Be careful not to damage the bamboo. Always paint and scrape outside, not inside, to prevent inhalation issues.

2. Clean it off

– After scraping or sanding, wipe off the dust and grit with a damp cloth. Allow the bamboo to dry completely before continuing. Do not get the bamboo too wet or you could permanently damage it in this state.

3. Prime it

– a primer is very important for paint to stick to bamboo and last. Because bamboo is so flexible and forgiving you should be careful to choose paints and primers that are flexible as well. Make sure the primer you use is especially formulated for wood. Let primer dry completely before painting.

4. Paint

– Spray paint if often used in wicker or rattan bamboo furniture because of the excellent coverage it gives. You can also use a variety of paint brush sizes to get every crack and crevice. If you choose to use spray paint make sure it is formulated for use on wood and works with the primer. Apply at least two to three coats for a long lasting paint job.

5. Protect

–If your furniture is going to be used often or will be outside you may want to apply a sealant as well. All you need to do is lightly sand the paint to provide a good grip and then apply the sealant. They have clear spray sealants as well or you can buy paint with sealant already in it to speed up the process.

Painting or repainting your bamboo furniture is a great way to bring new life to old pieces. Make it fit any décor with a fresh coat of paint and it will look brand new.
